Building Inspector
Under the direction of the City Engineer, incumbents are responsible for building inspection activities. Typical duties/responsibilities:
  • Review residential and commercial building plans for building and zoning code compliance.
  • Prepare and issue building permits for residential and commercial construction, including new work, additions, remodels, garages, fences, signs, roofs, sewer and water taps, street and alley cuts, demolition, setting mobile/modular homes, plumbing, HVAC, carports, decks, siding, windows, doors and foundations.
  • Understand and enforce ordinance adopted editions of the International Building Code (IBC), International Residential Code (IRC), International Plumbing Code (IPC), International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC) and International Mechanical Code (IMC).
  • Work outdoors in inclement weather conditions as necessary to complete inspections.
  • Follow safety procedures and protocol on job sites.
  • Have physical ability to lift, climb, kneel and walk at construction locations as required.
  • Document construction activity meets building code.
  • Utilize word processing, spreadsheet, email and other misc. office software.
  • Write reports on activities.
  • File and organize building permits, plans and other related information.
  • Establish good working relations with other staff and contractors.
Minimum qualifications are a high school diploma, valid driver`s license with a satisfactory driving record, construction experience and good computer and communication skills. Ideal candidates will possess certification as a residential and/or commercial building inspector from the International Code Council (ICC), applicable degree at an associate level or higher, knowledge of GIS and have a minimum of three years related experience.  Candidates without current ICC building inspector certification will be required to obtain such certification within 12 months from hire date as a condition of employment. 

This is a full-time position typically 40 Hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:00 A.M to 5:00 P.M. Pay $16/hour to $24/hour DOE with benefits including health and dental insurance, vacation time, holidays, sick leave and participation in the Wyoming Retirement System.   Applications can be obtained from the City of Newcastle, 10 West Warwick, Newcastle, Wyoming 82701 or at the link below.  The City of Newcastle is an equal opportunity employer.
